The study on heat transfer processes for external walls under boundary conditions in hot summer and cold winter zone can provide a reference for the thermal performance design of walls to meet the demands of different dynamic thermal environments in the region. Quantifies the thermal processes, instantaneous and cumulative heat transfer of four wall constructions under different air conditioning intermittent operation modes. The results show that the response rate of the internal wall surface temperature to the indoor air temperature for the internally insulated wall is the fastest, followed by the sandwich insulated wall, the self-insulated wall and the externally insulated wall. The characteristics of the building thermal process are different between the intermittent and continuous operation modes of the air conditioning, which leads to different energy saving paths and application scope of energy-efficient indoor thermal environment creating technologies in the intermittent operation mode from those in the continuous operation mode. The air conditioning operation mode has a significant effect on the instantaneous heat transfer through the external wall during the air conditioning operation period, so the operation mode of the heating or cooling equipment should be fully considered when analysing the heat transfer characteristics of the wall.
